I play so much Bethesda but it's soooooooo problematic.

The "do you prefer colonialism or ethnic cleansing" dilemma of Skyrim was particularly rough. It seems a more clearly pro-empire thing, but that's partially because the Empire appears to be a tributary-empire that doesn't extract any actual tribute?

I'm not sure they view the Stormcloaks as being wrong so much as manipulated, which is... worse?

Right? It's suppose to be one of these 'no right answer' dilemmas, which is just laughable when I'm playing as a Dunmer, the oppressed-to-be-cleansed population in this system and I can *join*the*Stormcloaks* - presumably to get murdered last?

RIGHT??? I was a Nord my first game and finished with the Stormcloaks. Started the next game as a Khajit and turned the recruiting meeting into a bloodbath.

The thing is, Bethesda used to be good at this sort of complex colonial narratives. Morrowind does this really well - imperial power is ambiguous; local authorities are too. It helps that all player characters, even Dunmer, are scorned as 'outlanders' so you are never an insider

Honestly, given just how much *better* its storytelling was, despite the limits of the game, I'd be much more excited for a full Morrowind remaster than for TES6 or FO5. At least modern Fallout gave us New Vegas though. Speaking of which - have you played Tyranny?

So it's an infinity engine style game (top-down, like Baldur's Gate), but it delivers on a complex political narrative without right answers pretty well. The character starts out as a servant for an evil overlord who has already won...

..leading to choices about how to deal with being in a corrupt system of power. Do you try to minimize the damage the system does? Violently overthrow it? Join the rebels? Strike out on your own? Or is that all too risky and do you go for being the loyal servant of the overlord?

Anyway, strongly recommend Tyranny and also Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2. All by the Fallout New Vegas guys (Obsidian), and all manage complex political storytelling better - though not perhaps perfectly - better than Bethesda does.
