Good post! The decline of the humanities reminded me of your analysis of classical battle speeches in the Helm’s Deep series of posts. If our culture-makers don’t know the great stories and traditions anymore, their art will suffer.

There seems to also be a political problem. The American Democratic experiment rests in having a broad-base of educates citizens. If only our elites study the humanities, it’s going to seriously threaten that Democratic legitimacy in the long run.

There is another aspect of letting humanities become the playground of elites. The overall ability of those involved in humanities is likely to decline if they must all be drawn from the rather small upper class demographic.
