I know you're joking, but I'm cautious with some of the North-of-the-Mason-Dixon triumphalism. My classmates at UMass often considered segregation to be a 'southern' thing. If we’re going through a cultural transition, and coming to terms with a very new way of looking at our past, then perhaps it would be good to try to find markers of continuity with our own past that affirm both the old and new.

It occurs to me that many of the more problematic statues are all rather old. Many of them could be “rebooted.” Don’t have subservient natives flanking Teddy Roosevelt, make them equal. Don’t have Sacagewa cower behind Lewis and Clark; have her leading them, etc
