Well, and honestly, classicists could complain about the book less if we went and replaced it with something newer and perhaps more nuanced. But there really isn't anything compact and for-a-beginner in that space?
You can hardly assign an undergraduate - or suggest to a non-academic - plowing through Isaac's Limits of Empire, leavened with Wheeler's Methological Limits. It's just not accessible. Hoyos has a good companion up to Trajan, but, companions...¯\_(ツ)_/¯
