Dear Absolutely Everyone Who Works with Material Culture: please cite every object and piece of artwork to either an original publication, a comprehensive study, or its current museum inv. number. Do note cite an as being "from an unknown monument" or just "private collection."
And yes, I have seen both of those things done. Yes, in works published in the last decade. It drives me bonkers. How the hell can I check anything if all you give me is a line drawing and the citational equivalent of a shrug-emoji?
Umm, this would require people reject independent collector privilege, and their own elite connections privilege, and refuse to hint at things no one else gets to see anytime soon.
