My impression is the left tends to focus on economic elites, the right focuses on cultural elites; a modern remix of the old business-equestrians vs. political/agriculture senators nonsense. Both are elites of a sort, using non-elites as a proxies in their status competition.
For my part, I think both groups are too damn focused on competing with each other to show anywhere near enough oblige to justify the noblesse.
Does anybody enjoy genuine cultural elite status and not economic elite status though? My inclination is to see "cultural elites" as a slippery category purpose-built to take in a lot of people who actually have little or no power.
It depends on where you draw the income line, but I'd suggest that there are a great many journalists and academics who make only marginally more than a moderately above-average electrician, who wield cultural power disproportionate to their income and might thus be called elites
