One of the biggest takeaways from This Whole Thing imo should be that most people take a lot of cues from elected leaders. This is mostly heartening! Unless, of course, our political culture is irreparably poisoned and leaders can't be trusted to act in the public interest at all

Although even that is maybe still good? Broad issues of culture are really hard to change. We get a chance to change our leaders every few years. One hopes the pandemic has/will chasten at least a few of the lulz-nothing-matters crowd. Hope-over-experience, I suppose.

Very early on it was a standard message that Trump would not be able to lie away the pandemic, even with his captive audience. For awhile it looked like he had actually had surprising success there, but reality might now be intruding in the worst possible way.
