But take Troy (2004), "Let no man forget how menacing we are" - how well is that going to work after your 'menacing' comrade takes an arrow to the face right next to you? Pretty sure everyone has had a parent tell them 'the animal is more scared of you than you are of it.'
...enjoyable enough in the moment (and I don't disparage the moment. I enjoy a lot of the scenes some of these lame hollywood speeches are in! I also like a Big Mac, every so often), but neither practical and portable, nor truly excellent.

What's an example of a speech you see as truly excellent?

Of battle speeches or of rhetoric more generally? In that dichotomy, the battle speeches are basically all the 'practical and portable' sort of hardtack, whereas the truly excellent belongs pretty much entirely to 'high' rhetoric.
