Been piling through Hollywood battle speeches for reference for the next blog and it is striking to me just how poor most of them are. Nearly all of the work is done by the soundtrack. Howard Shore or John Williams can make anything sound inspiring. But as speeches...eh?

And those are some of the better ones. So many of these damn movie battle speeches are basically football pep talks, "I'm with you, you got this, winning is fun, go get 'em!"

I have two for you. First, Robert Bruce in Outlaw King: "I could talk about God, but he has no place where we are going. I could talk about honor, but you are here. You know enough about honor. I know you all as men, but today, we are beasts."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=104FfuVcZwU …

So, 1) a 14th century knight saying there's no place for God on a battlefield is pants-on-head-silly but 2) The 'no need to talk honor, you are here' is a good echo of a common trope of ancient battle speeches, "brave men require few words."

I kind of like the Gladiator speech, although I haven't heard it in a while. They're professionals, so he gives them a no BS speech with a little gallows humor.

Many years ago, I overheard two alterkockers (probably the same age I am now) talking in the gym locker room. One said "The next time you wake up and nothing hurts... you'll be dead." When I heard the Gladiator speech, I said to myself "Ridley Scott must go to the same gym..."
