This got raised in comments. This is a film-only scene. If Jackson thinks Aragorn is going to lie to this kid, he has catastrophically misunderstood Aragorn's character. If he thinks Aragorn doesn't know a good sword, he has catastrophically misunderstood Aragorn's character.

So the issue boils down to two possibilities: 1) The prop team, in trying to select a sword to make this point, picked a bad example OR 2) Jackson catastrophically misunderstood Aragorn's character. I think the evidence argues for (1) over (2), given the rest of the films.
