I mean, the fighting in the Deep would make the most sense if there were no Elves there, but Eomer leading the Rohirrim, who regroup into a shield wall after the blast and retreat into the caves with Gimli. I'm only half joking - introducing Elves causes all sorts of problems...
...because Tolkien (and the broader legendarium) is pretty clear that Elven warriors are pretty tough. It upgrades the Deeping Wall defense from select levymen amateurs to hardened professional heavy infantrymen. I'm not convinced that an unprepared escalade...

...against un-degraded defenses, facing off against cohesive, hardened heavy infantry was ever possible. I certainly can't think of an example where anyone pulled it off (obviously the word 'unprepared' does a lot of work there, but see the previous post in the series).

The blasting fire did degrade defenses but the breach was only that. Ha, once again things would be better with fewer elves.
