HK people knew this was not a war they could win. They wanted the PRC to force its hand to show the rest of the world the real face of China. The HK we knew started diying in the early oughs, but at least we know it was murdered in plain sight, for everyone to see.
While I am pretty sure that the PRC is making a strategic error where costs will far outweigh gains, that makes me no happier that it looks very much like the Hong Kong we've known (me only from afar) is coming to an end. Freedom retreats; the world gets a little darker.

I feel like Hong Kong is another brick in the wall. Hungary, Turkey, Poland, India, USA, Brazil, UK all have moved toward authoritarianism in the past decade.
