I am trained as a historian. This carries a whole set of (often unspoken and unexamined) skills and methodological orientations about how I approach a problem.

When I teach a course on "strategy" or "US national security," I am not teaching a history class, although it's impossible that my disciplinary training doesn't affect how I see and understand the topics at hand.

At the same time, I am emphatically NOT training historians. Any more than my poli sci colleagues are training students to be political scientists.

I rely on my IR/poli sci/area studies colleagues to help me (a historian) understand how *they* approach the same topics and questions.

I rely on my military and Interagency colleagues - whose perspective is very different from my own - to help me understand how academic approaches might vary from practitioner/policy approaches.
