Odd question: if a Latin text, probably composed in mid-12th century, uses 'consul' instead of 'comes' (i.e. for the counts of Edessa and Tripoli), is this normal? Also, is there a particular region where this is more likely? #medievaltwitter

I would posit Italy, especially the north, where this is a title in active use. My go-to medieval Italy historian isn't on Twitter but I can look into this for you if no one with more direct expertise answers
