@BretDevereaux found your blog a few weeks ago and it's great! Deeply absorbing to read in quarantine. Quick q: in several posts you say the Romans fortified their camp each night on the march - would the wood for palisades be part of the supply train or found as the army moved?
The wood for the palisade (in stakes called 'pila muralia') was carried by the army. Polybius (18.18.4-5) implies that they were carried by the individual soldiers, at least during the Middle Republic. They were reused from one camp to the next.
