Yeah, Falkenhayn’s objectives are still very debated. The best discussion I’ve seen of them is in Verdun: the Longest Battle in the Great War by Paul Jankowski. He also explores the less than logical rationale behind the French decision not to pull back to more defensible lines
Assessing the plan requires greater clarity than we have re: Falkenhayn's actual goals. My understand is that there is still significant debate as to if the attritional plan was actually the thinking at the outset, vs. ex-post-facto justification for a battle-gone-wrong.
