Dan Bolger's *Why We Lost* has many gripping small unit narratives, but his tale of the Gurkhas in Chapter 13 is a model. Highly advised reading for junior leaders.

In all seriousness, though, it's fascinating to me to watch the "first-take" of GWOT history evolve in almost exactly the same trajectory as ACW and Vietnam (the two I know best). We start in the memoir phase, then the who's to blame phase, then the official history phase.
Just wait till we get to the "all of the official histories are lost except one, which is in fragments, so we're left to guess at important questions of doctrine and composition" phase.
