It’s actually pretty amazing how much discussion of Roman legionary structure there is, and how relevant it is, in this blog post about the Lord of the Rings by classicist @BretDevereaux.
I confess, it was a bit of an indulgence. The economic cost/impact of Roman military activity in the middle and late republic is my current area of research focus, so it just suggests itself as comparative material.
I think it provides great context, and shows that you’re not just spitballing the analysis of a purely fictional, and thus not necessarily grounded in reality (Jackson’s version more than Tolkien’s). Hence, your asides on the books are some of the best part of each post!
