What a great read, I finally got to finish it yesterday! I'm curious, how do they prevent the cavalry vanguard that's a few miles out from staying a few miles out? It might be hard to keep them at a semi-consistent distance when the escorting group might be moving a lot slower
If you dig into the manual, there's a lot of direction and provision for mounted messengers transiting back and forth very regularly, so the far-forward cav. force is kept in contact with the cav at the front of the column.

So clearly this was a fairly major concern - not only that the cav scouts inform the column of a threat, but know the situation of the column too. One wonders if it was also to restrain the 'dash' of cav commanders who tended to run off and forget their jobs (*cough* Stuart)
