I've always found this reading of the Greco-Persian Wars strange - the dire predictions of what would happen had the Achaemenids triumphed; tyranny! etc. But the Argeads - no problems at all. Or the Romans. Revealing, I think, which monarchies are unspeakable tyrannies.

(To be clear for any unwary readers: Revealing in the sense that it often reveals how many scholar's idea of tyrannical monarchy has more to do with the skin-tone of the ruler than institutions, forms of government, or suchlike).

Yes, the idea that it not only saved "the West" from tyranny (which Hdt. himself denies!) but also that it somehow did so for evermore. Have these people read anything about the intervening 2500 years?
