You mention "kingship" as a specific type of monarchy in the first piece; what defines kingship & what are some nonkingship monarchies?

Oh boy. My cobbled together definition is that kingship is a form of monarchy (usually, but not always hereditary) in which the monarch functions as the chief general, chief judge and chief priest of the society, sanctified by traditional observance and religious ritual.

It stands in contrast to, for instance, military dictators (religious roles) or Greek tyrants (almost definitionally not traditional).

Thanks! I suppose it's next worth asking---is this how ancient e.g. Roman observers would have seen kingship? Because (and correct me if I'm wrong here) these sound a lot like the powers that Roman emperors collected
