I loved your article, but I would make a difference: "hard times" do build harder men, that does not mean better soldiers. I would put anytime a well trained, well organized platoon of "soft" soldiers with logistic support against a warband of fearsome individualistic warriors.

The issue is that military performance is the metric by which the mirage makes value judgments, because the mirage emerges out of cultures (ancient and modern) which held military virtues as the highest and most important sort of virtues.
