Congratulations on being able to reach a wider audience. Though I disagree that Conan is an example of this (at least the books): yes, hard times have created an hard and strong man, Conan, but he never created any good time, except in some post-victory celebrations...

… whereas the meme is usually applied on the level of a civilization. And when expanding to a larger group, those hard men never do much beyond razing a frontier fort (beyond the dark river).
