And people are apparently paying for it! It's almost like decades of de-emphasizing the humanities has produced folks with crucial skill-gaps in the 'soft' skills that are nevertheless essential in a world that remains dominated by *people* and not computers. 2/5

Now a caveat - I suspect some might say, "What about ESL/ESP, folks with non-standard education or abilities, etc - couldn't these programs be for them?" Sure! More language-learning resources are always great. But I would note that is *not* who they are being marketed to.. 3/5

...the grammerly ads I see are clearly targeted at culturally fluent white workers in white-collar jobs involving management and communication. Precisely the sort of person who might have been expected to have developed some skill in prose style during their education! 4/5

Moreover, while I am no expert in ESL education, I read/grade a fair number of papers every year from non-native English speakers, and they tend to have quite different struggles from native-speakers with bad prose style. Grammerly promises to fix the latter, not the former. 5/5

I disagree strenuously. I see Grammarly as a form of remedial education for those who went through permissive humanities programs that stressed self-expression at the expense of formal "excellence."

It should be seen as a partner to humanities – it provides real time correction on the rote aspects of the discipline, freeing teacher up to focus on the higher ideas/purposes of their fields.

Oh, absolutely agree. Part of that are corners of disciplines that have come to prefer obscurantism (which I abhor; as a historian if you cannot explain your topic to a lay person in everyday words, you yourself do not understand it well enough)...
