As an analogy for the level of resource&social mobilization required, war seems an apt comparison. The main value of the analogy is that we (instinctively?) understand the importance of shared sacrifice in war, something we seem to comprehend better than in pandemics.

Good points, indeed. But war also inspires (and is intended to?) fear, division, and a militarization of our society that sits in tension with shared sacrifices.

I think that's right - normally, it would be a task for leadership to counteract that tendency, to a build and us-and-them vs. the virus mentality. After all, war can also build solidarity within groups. But with *our* leaders...I'm not holding my breath.
