Paul isn't whiny! He's a teenager who has most of his family murdered and has to cope with several subsequent total upheavals to his environment. But he consistently acts to cope with it, he doesn't sit on the sides and complain.
I think the challenge of casting for Paul Atreides is that you are essentially casting two characters with one actor: you need someone who is both whiny Paul and the hardened Muad'dib. Alec Newman fit the latter, but not the former; MacLachlan the former, but not latter.

There is no whiny Paul. He was trained from birth by his father to be a great leader; by his mother to be a Bene Gesserit; and by Thufir Hawat to be a mentat. The books make it clear that it took someone such as this to become the Kwisatz Haderach.
