As much as I enjoy indulging in the tradition of junior academics engaging in self-deprecation, I wonder the degree to which that sort of thing just cedes ground to the toxic forces of anti-intellectualism and anti-expertise in the broader culture...1/2
...while academics make mistakes as often as the next fellow, at some point we need to be willing to argue *to*the*public* that yes, we do have a form of expertise which is both deserving of respect & a resource for the broader community. 2/3
Otherwise, frankly, what are we here for? Of course, that means sticking to your expertise and not going on TV demanding deference on matters about which you know nothing. But it also means a willingness to argue for the value of that expertise. 3/3
