I guess it’s more instructive to take it state by state. The politics of the situation is what brings it back to national stats—POTUS is ultimately responsible for implementing nat’l response. This more than anything is his albatross.

I would quite frankly be stunned if the United States had fewer deaths than any individual European country, because the pop. of the US is much larger (closer to the pop. of the whole EU than any member state). Sure, but then ought it to be national *per capita* stats? Or a comparison of the American response with the aggregate response of the entire EU to get a similar population size? By my math, the EU has had 50,000+ COVID deaths (over 447m people).
