The original article (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/02/us/coronavirus-social-distancing.html …) has a much more useful map noting relative changes in travel patterns, which presents a lot more nuance. Not sure why everyone is running with the less informative map.
Except that, evidently, it is the twitter insert picture, even though, again, less informative than the other map. Sigh.
Yeah, I mean, I think more people are reacting to Barbaro's tweet than the story (paywall surely contributes, but also laziness). The map you mention *does* seem far more useful, and seems much more to reflect what we'd *expect* to see.
