But it sure seems to me like that evidence, limited and difficult as it may be, points in the direction of at least a 'proto-phalanx' - if you will - in existence *somewhere* (maybe Italy first, re: Chigi vase) by the late 600s; early 500s.

Is that proto-phalanx the fully-formed construct of Thucydides? Probably not. I'm not sure even the phalanx of the Pelop. War was as cleanly defined as Thucydides presents it.
