Yeah. Programs that can should honestly try to retain their graduate students. My appointment ends at the end of the semester, and after that it's <gestures at empty space>. Don't send any graduate students out into that if you can avoid it.
Yeah. And it's not like there's much of a rush to get to the job market. I've already gotten one 'we've decided to suspend this search' email - I'm sure I'll probably get more (which will magically transform from 'suspended' into 'abandoned' as the economy turns bad).
