Remember: It isn't about protecting you from COVID-19. It's about protecting other people *from you* if you have the virus and may not know it yet. This is hoplite-style disease control. A hoplite wears his armor for himself, but his shield for the community (Plut. Mor. 220A).
So wash your hands for yourself. But if sick, quarantine for the community. Cancel events for the community. Reconsider travel for the community. Be generous to employees/students, for the community. The phalanx is only as strong as its weakest member.

There is reciprocity. You do it to protect yourself and others and hope others have the same consideration. I see it as other individuals, versus the somewhat "collectivistic" implications of "community."
