@BretDevereaux Concrete question. In a fantasy world, how would practicing, orthopractical polytheists react to the cults of orcs and such? Especially if they realize that they worship the same deities, although in different form?
...most famously the Interpretatio graeca et romana, where Greeks and Romans understood other religions in terms of their own practice (e.g. Melqart = Heracles, etc). So that poses no problem. As for gods of places - well, the world is full of them...

...but you really only need to worry about the ones that pertain to use. So strange deities that dwell far away are a curiosity, but not a pressing concern. On the flip side, if those deities can do something for you, you might attempt to buy them off - Roman evocatio.

I'm currently thinking about how to integrate your valuable lessons in our RPG. Say, a god is clearly an enemy god, like the orcish war god, what do you do?

Well, if you win, then clearly your gods were stronger, which resolves the tension. But the other option is evocatio: https://oxfordre.com/classics/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780199381135.001.0001/acrefore-9780199381135-e-2600 … You use a ritual to bribe the enemy's god to join your side, by promising it cult observance in your own community.
