@BretDevereaux Concrete question. In a fantasy world, how would practicing, orthopractical polytheists react to the cults of orcs and such? Especially if they realize that they worship the same deities, although in different form?
Syncretism - the merging or adoption of other religious practices - is a powerful force in many polytheistic faiths, historically. I can't imagine anyone would be bothered to find out the strange people over the hills worship the same gods by different names...

...most famously the Interpretatio graeca et romana, where Greeks and Romans understood other religions in terms of their own practice (e.g. Melqart = Heracles, etc). So that poses no problem. As for gods of places - well, the world is full of them...

...but you really only need to worry about the ones that pertain to use. So strange deities that dwell far away are a curiosity, but not a pressing concern. On the flip side, if those deities can do something for you, you might attempt to buy them off - Roman evocatio.
