Your average Viet Cong was just as uncomfortable in the jungle as your average American. Your average Iraqi uses a pickup, not a camel, to go to the desert. I wonder if America "orientalizes" insurgents into Natives of the Terrain to feel better about failing to win wars.
This is a literally ancient trope that is not restricted to the 'East.' It shows up in Caesar's description of the Suebi's resistance to cold (B.G. 4.1).
