Is it just me, or are nerds like @BretDevereaux and @lymanstoneky leading a paradigm shift back to LotR as the peak of fantasy realism?

I think part of why LOTR actually performs well is because more modern writers are actually quite divorced from the basic realities of pre-industrial life. They have absolutely no conception of such a world and so write essentially implausible fantasies.
Agreed. Part of Tolkien's 'advantage' in this regard is that he was both deeply familiar with soldiering (having done so himself) and with pre-modern constraints, being deeply immersed in pre-modern literature.

Classicists will occasionally talk about a scholars 'Latinity' - the quality of being so deeply immersed in Latin that its forms come naturally (handy, particularly when dealing with defective texts). Tolkien, I would suggest, was possessed of this sense, but for the pre-modern.
