I understand this critique, but I also feel that I should note that the research literature on the efficacy of political spending/purchased media is pretty ambivalent. A lot of Bloomberg's bounce is coming from earned media where he's getting attention he does not deserve.

That's fair; his spending, however, goes well beyond ad space - stories about his effective monopoly of whole swathes of the staff pool, starving local campaigns where money DOES matter, etc. Plus, his whole career as a public figure is purchased in the first place!
