It's also, as I note to my students, a fantastically complex tactical system. Multiple kinds of infantry, multiple kinds of cavalry. Pre-standardized artillery meant that every gun is its own creature.

I use in my lectures an illustration of the Battle of Nieuwpoort (1600); it has pikemen, muskeeters, harquebusiers, skirmishers, lancers, cuirassiers, caracole cav, heavy arty and light arty, all in one army.
