You know, I asked a colleague about this and got some reading to do, so a Lonely Cities: Rice Edition may be forthcoming at some point.

Great to hear! What did they recommend you read? A lot of the stuff I've found on JSTOR doesn't really touch on the physical layout of the countryside, so to speak.
