It seems to me part of the problem is in Clausewitz's assumption that the pursuit of the political object was governed by reason. But so much that passes as strategy is a product of motivated cognition, answers searching for questions.

How much of the current emphasis on drones and airpower comes out of - not strategy - but the emotional fact that to be struck and not somehow strike back *feels bad,* so we bomb to feel better, rather than achieve a strategic objective?
