Stole out of the conference a bit to see the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The material and presentation were extremely effective and quite moving. Quite a lot there - if you go, budget a significant chunk of time.
They give you a march through the history 1500-present in the underground levels (do this first). Don't neglect upper floors either. Upper floors include a section on African Americans in military which includes a quite moving gallery of African American medal of honor winners.
They also currently have a temporary exhibition ('We Return Fighting') that showcases African American role in WWI (very significant and often not emphasized) and the contemporary struggle for justice. Anyway, if you're gonna be in D.C. and haven't gone - put this on your list.
