I love your blog and I'm definitely going to read the post over the weekend, but right now my biggest concern is how you pronounce the c in "Thuc."

So, Thuc. is the Oxford Classical Dictionary standard abbreviation for Thucydides. But in terms of pronunciation, well, his name is actually θουκυδίδης, Thu-cu-di-des (with the 'e' in 'des' sounding like the 'ai' in 'wait'). So yes, Thuc. would rhyme with that other word.

Pedantically, re the translation you used: J.M. Dent is the London publisher. The translator is Richard Crawley - and that’s exactly the same translation that the Landmark edition is based on. Not highly recommended if you’re looking for an accurate version...

Revised to reflect. Although I stick by my recommendation of the Landmark. Raw philological accuracy is not the most valuable thing for someone just coming to a text - the landmark's notes and explanatory essays are invaluable.
