Some very good stuff here. I would only want to stress that the "orthopractic" nature of polytheisms does not mean that there was/is *no* component of "belief" in them. Just because polytheisms have been *tolerant* of lack of belief, does not make it normative for them.

Just noticed this. I think you have it exactly right - belief is obviously common (I have the line elsewhere on the blog 'People in the past generally believed their own religion'), though it's also not always ortho - there's a lot more tolerance of variations.
