One of the 'secrets' to Roman success was the strong bonds of what they called fides - keeping their bargains. The Romans had a well-earned reputation as faithful allies (e.g. 1Macc 8:1-11). The Romans presented themselves as the people of fides abroad (e.g. Diod. 23.1).
This wasn't just moral posturing. It provided a real strategic advantage: Roman alliances were strong because the Romans showed by their actions that friendship with Rome was valuable, that the Romans would fight for proven friends, even at great cost.
We used to be a people of fides too. Our allies saw and knew that we would fight for them, and it made us strong. Those alliances let us do things no other country could do. Where are American fides today? O tempora, o mores.
