Something that didn't fit in the elephant logistics section but I wanted to note (so I'll add it here), is the assumption (recently echoed on Game of Thrones) that elephants cannot be transported by sea. This is clearly incorrect.
The most obvious evidence being Carthage, which routinely used elephants on Sicily (an island where elephants are not native) and Spain (also no native elephants there). Hannibal famously brought elephants into Italy via Spain as well.
Clearly they had to get to all of these places by boat; presumably they did not swim. So don't blame the boats, blame the misallocation of Game of Throne's season8 CGI budget. Or poor writing. Or both!
