3. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of the Greek oracles, or the supposed influence of chickens on Roman war-making, but what else is there, and what form did all of this actually take? I recently discovered your blog and it's an amazing read, by the way. Thank you! 8^)
Some of this is actually already brewing. We're going to be talking, this week or next, about how oath-taking works and its supernatural connotations. But the influence of ritual and religious affairs on war is huge and we'll definitely talk more about it as we go.
