I like the contrast you made between the books and the movies. The visuals produced in a matter of seconds of film require lots of words, and the mental elements that a book can express in a sentence are not as easily expressed in film.

Personally, I like that film/books compliment each other. For GoT, the show created some awesome moments, but if you didn’t watch carefully, you might miss the subtle things the characters are doing. The POV storytelling approach in the books helped add depth to characters.

I really loved this series of Tolkien articles! I have a question I always wanted to ask someone who has knowledge of ancient sieges... Are Tokien's fortresses & cities placed in weird spots below mountains, cliffs, and high ground? Like is this normal for pre-modern forts?

It depends on the local security situation. Rome was founded on a set of (famously seven) hills for defensive purposes. Southern France is littered with hilltop villages - it was a conflict zone in the Middle Ages. Tolkien is dramatic in his placement, but not crazy.
