Also, it's not right all the time. As Cliff Rogers reminded me, armies that don't have the resources to lay siege, will instead conduct raiding/devastation campaigns, and those too can lead to field battles. Thus the death of Theodred in Saruman's early raiding operations.
Oh, absolutely. I originally planned a note about how Greek warfare in the classical period is defined by their inability to siege effectively, but decided the post was long enough as it was.
