So, a lot of new followers. Welcome! I mostly use this space to nerd out a bunch about ancient history, military history, or both. I also have a blog where I do mostly that thing, but more so: I also occasionally opine on geopolitics/nat-sec Cheers!

Huh, new Warframe expansion. Might have to go back and play again, but I'm really disappointed this expansion doesn't appear to come with a shanty that just utterly slaps. And we aaaaaaaaaall lift...

It isn't much, but its something I can do. I hope we can reschedule the workshop. Of course this has to be a huge headache for the organizers (who have all of my sympathy). I'm sorry to them and any of y'all who were planning on tuning in to listen if this disrupts your plans.

I have complained in the past () how faculty sometimes talk the talk when it comes to supporting graduate student workers but when it comes to it are unwilling to sacrifice. Now I get to walk the walk I guess, in this small, mostly insignificant way.

So I was unaware of the goings on at (been a bit locked in my own end-of-semester world), but I'm not willing to cross a digital picket line and undermine . I've asked the organizers if we can reschedule the workshop (here's hoping!)

I only regret that I have but one lap to give for my cats. For both of them wanted lap time when I got home, and so one was bound to be disappointed (it was Percy).

War often functions like an earthquake: pressures built over decades but unexpressed (except as quiet stresses) suddenly release and reconfigure a space, typically in very destructive ways. Only a very great fool thinks they can fully predict, or control that change.

Good 🧵, especially the reminder that the use of force (in this case contemplating Russian military action in Ukraine) can cause lots of unpredictable changes in all sorts of impacted countries.

My Global History of Warfare student are taking their final on the day that, 80 years later, still lives in Infamy. I'm sure the Romans would have considered this an ill-omened day, a dies nefastus on which no important business could take place.

Taiwan doesn't know if it's going to get what asymmetric defense is supposed to buy time for. Why would it commit to a defense posture under those circumstances?

...reiterate a commitment to open debate and back that up by refusing to allow the university's internal power over hiring/retention/student conduct to be used to stifle speech. Alas, my sense is many unis are going in the other direction. end/11

It seems to me that universities that wanted to could take some fairly basic steps to reinforce a culture of free inquiry and open debate. They don't need to invite the firebrand fool of the day, they just need to set policies that protect speech... 9/11

My own sense - supported by the data I've seen - is that students do 'hear' the overall message of university policy, diffused a hundred ways. And in many places, that message is, "conformity makes our PR and legal department's job easier, so conform." Not a good message! 9/11

The good news, just looking at TheFire's data, is that this is a problem that seems to be subject to policy influence: schools with good speech policies generally showed less chilled campus speech. So this is a fixable issue! The bad news is we're not fixing it. 8/11
