  1. And with that, I’m going to put my phone on the charger and order another mai tai, because I’ve earned it.

  2. There are days when I regret ever having written a blog post because everybody wants a freaking book in every blog post. They want every blog post to cover every edge case and exception. “Hey why does your blog post not tell me how to implement a database server from scratch?” Fu

The title of this is "Against unnecessary databases", but the author's talking specifically about one particular application. I like their pros/cons discussion of whether databases make sense for this particular app (versus working directly w/files.)

Now a few days in, and they have one elevator working (for the entire building) but it requires an operator, and they’re only using it to go up. If you want to come down, you have to take the stairs. We picked the perfect time to be gone for a week and a half.

Which of course made everything smell worse. Building smells like dead fish now, I’m told. Pet owners were letting their pets poop in the hallways and stairwells because they didn’t wanna go down 20-30 flights of stairs in the heat. They got the water back on, so toilets work.

The next day, San Diego has a bit of a heat wave, warmer than normal for Jan: high 70s and bright sun. No AC in the building, plus this is a LEED certified building. The windows don’t open. Floor to ceiling glass. Neighbor said it was unbearable heat.

We must be living right. The night after we left our high rise apartment in San Diego, a pipe burst one floor below us, flooding the next dozen floors below in the middle of the night. Took out the water, HVAC, and all elevators. The building is 30+ stories tall. (1/…)

Dang it, I have to actually work this week, hahaha. Doing a week of training classes onsite in Puerto Rico. Erika's with me on this trip, and she gets to stay in the hotel and lounge all day. This place is gooooorgeous:
